heights

sometime during junior year,

right around finals,

I was in the grad library, studying for exams.

later in the night, I noticed that someone wrote this on the side of the table:

heights by great men reached and kept

were not obtained by sudden flight

but, while their companions slept,

they were toiling upward in the night.

later found this to be an excerpt from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

I remember this giving me that extra motivation for the rest of the night,

and strengthened my quite twisted justification that it's okay to give up sleeping.
